Growing the Local Food Economy
In January to March 2025 the South of Scotland Enterprise funded a wide-ranging assessment of the region’s food and drink industry to help small producers and strengthen local supply chains.

LOCAL FOOD GROWTH PLAN
The South of Scotland Local Food Plan pulls together work by key stakeholders from across both regions, to support local producers, businesses and supply chains.
The Plan offers a raft of key actions across local production, infrastructure, marketing, collaboration and policy.
The Plan is a call to action to those working in the food and drink sector to work together to enable a resilient local food economy.

INCREASING FRUIT & VEG
The Veg Production in Dumfries & Galloway Report explores strategies to increase local fruit and vegetable production, addressing Scotland’s over-reliance on imports. Through surveys, focus groups, and case studies, it identifies key challenges in land access, finance, skills, and markets, recommending collaborative solutions to build resilience, sustainability, and stronger local food systems.

SMALL-SCALE FOOD PRODUCTION
Increasing Small-Scale Food Production
through Land Release outlines opportunities for unlocking land to support
housing, economic growth, and community development.
It highlights barriers such as infrastructure costs and planning constraints, while recommending strategic investment, collaboration, and innovative delivery models to accelerate land use and maximise long-term benefits for local communities and economies.
